How to turn a part of a song into MIDI

Ask for “the bass line as MIDI”, or any other stem, or the whole mix. You get a MIDI file of the notes it hears, to open in your music app.

Step by step

  1. Split the song so each part is on its own stem.
  2. Ask for the stem you want as MIDI: “the vocal melody as MIDI”.
  3. Open the file in your music app or notation app to see and edit the notes.

Say it your way

  • Give me the bass line as MIDI.

  • The vocal melody as MIDI.

  • MIDI of the whole song.

Good to know

MIDI from a single stem is the cleanest, because the notes of one part are not mixed with the others. A bass line or a sung melody usually comes out well. A dense chord part needs more tidying.

The MIDI is a starting point, not a perfect transcription: check the rhythm, then quantize and fix the odd note in your app. It saves the hours of picking every note out by ear.
